This is Datu Mansoladlad from the Banwaon Lumad tribe of Mindanao in the Philippines. The Banwaon and other Lumad tribes have been in recent years fighting an uphill battle to retain control of their ancestral lands. The government has intensified militarization of ancestral lands in Mindanao in order to pave the way for the entry of large-scale mining and logging companies and exploitation of the rich natural resources that can be found in Lumad areas.

Under the Duterte administration, at least 47 Lumad have become victims of extrajudicial killings. More than 10,000 Lumad have been forcibly displaced due to militarization and attacks on Lumad schools and communities. Militarization and grave human rights violations against the Lumad have intensified since martial law was declared in Mindanao by Duterte in May 2017.
